Inclusion Department
"My Community... A City for Everyone: Our mission is to implement policies and best practices that empower people of determination to make choices in an environment that is inclusive and ensures access to opportunities on an equal basis with others." was launched in November 2013 by HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of The Executive Council.
This policy embeds our approach. At Greenwood International School, we believe in inclusive education- A School for All. Education should be about enabling all children, in line with their abilities, to live full and independent lives so that they can contribute to their communities, cooperate with other people and continue to learn throughout their lives. We promote and support the inclusion and integration of students with special educational needs in our school.
Special education is the practice of educating learners in a way that addresses their individual differences and needs. Ideally, this process involves the individually planned and systematically monitored arrangement of teaching procedures, adapted equipment and materials, and accessible settings. These interventions are designed to help individuals with special needs achieve a higher level of personal self-sufficiency and success in school and in their community, which may not be available if the learners were only given access to a typical classroom education.
At Greenwood International School, we value, respect, and support the learning and development of all students. GIS has a very strong commitment towards inclusion; we promote and celebrate diversity. We have learners who are identified with Special Educational Needs, Additional Educational Needs, and English as a Second Language, English Language Learners, More Able and Exceptionally Able Learners.
At the school we believe in differentiated instruction, individualized lessons, and personalized curricula to meet the different needs. Differentiation is highly valued at the school; differentiation occurs in the overall teaching methods and instructional strategies, lesson plans, and assessments of learning objectives.
Teachers receive continuous training and support from the Inclusion as well as specialists, so as to ensure that the students’ learning outcomes, engagement, and self-awareness are improving.
Inclusion should not be feared, it should be welcomed; with inclusion comes diversity and integration, which prepares us for the real world. We believe that inclusion is not only about differentiating the curriculum, mixing up students with different abilities in a classroom, teaching them math, English, science, etc., Inclusion is a preparation for life and for living. With the right provisions our students can grow into valued employees, responsible citizens and reliable friends.
